The
re-enactment 'The Battle of Worcester'
September
2001
The
re-enactment will take place on the actual meadows, close to Powick
bridge, where the fighting took place in 1651.
As a prelude to the event, members of the Sealed Knot Society
who specialise in the re-enactment of the battles of the Civil War,
will march from Gloucester to Worcester in period costume. They
will camp before the event, with their families, adjacent to Powick
bridge and will stage living camp demonstrations.
The Sealed Knot have advised that 1200 members will
take part with some 1500 followers.
The land close
to old Powick bridge is thought to
be where many of the Scots casualties were buried after the battle.
The
Memorial will be in the form of a Two ton block of granite suitably
inscribed, It is currently being prepared in Scotland but in order
to give it suitable surroundings by Powick bridge, donations are
urgently required. We wish to have wooden post and rail surrounds
with a gravel base, but as of the 27 July we are unable to order
the work to be done as there are insufficient funds.
Our bank
account is' Battle of Worcester 1651 - Scots Memorial'.
Any surplus funds would go to charity. Our treasurer is a Scotsman!
please be as generous as possible. 3000 dead Scotsmen deserve to
be recognised.
The
inscription reads as follows:
"
In memory of the thousands of Scots, Highland and Lowland, who
fought here far from home, so well and so bravely, against insuperable
odds and gave their lives in devoted loyalty, to each other and
to their leaders."
